Description

Discover the rich, velvety goodness of traditional Amish Baked Custard – a comforting, homemade classic that’s quick and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

– 4 large eggs

– 2 cups whole milk

– 3/4 cup granulated sugar

– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. 1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).

2. 2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs until lightly beaten.

3. 3. Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.

4. 4. Add the sugar and vanilla extract, and whisk until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is well combined.

5. 5. Pour the custard mixture into a 9-inch pie dish or baking pan.

6. 6. Place the dish in a larger baking pan and pour hot water into the larger pan, creating a water bath (bain-marie) that reaches about halfway up the sides of the custard dish.

7. 7. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

8. 8. Remove the custard from the oven and the water bath, and allow it to cool completely before serving.

Notes

For a richer custard, you can use half-and-half or heavy cream instead of whole milk. You can also add a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon to the top before baking for extra flavor.
