Description
Indulge in the authentic taste of Chicago-style deep dish pizza, made right at home in your cast iron skillet. This easy recipe delivers a crispy, buttery crust and a gooey, cheesy filling that will satisfy your pizza cravings.
Ingredients
– 2 1/2 cups (315g) all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1 teaspoon instant yeast
– 1 cup (240ml) warm water
– 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil
– 1 (28oz) can crushed tomatoes
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 teaspoon dried oregano
– 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
– 8 ounces (225g) shredded mozzarella cheese
– 2 ounces (55g) grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and instant yeast. Add the warm water and olive oil, and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
3. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
4. Meanwhile, prepare the sauce by combining the crushed tomatoes, garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using) in a bowl.
5. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
6. Grease a 10-inch cast iron skillet with olive oil.
7. Roll out the dough into a circle larger than the size of the skillet. Carefully transfer the dough to the skillet, pressing it up the sides to create a deep-dish crust.
8. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border.
9. Sprinkle the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses over the sauce.
10. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
11. Let the pizza cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For a crispier crust, you can pre-bake the dough for 5-10 minutes before adding the toppings. You can also experiment with different cheese blends or toppings to customize your Chicago-style deep dish pizza.
