Ingredients
– 3 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/4 cup granulated sugar
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
– 1 cup warm milk
– 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
– 2 large eggs
– 1 cup prepared vanilla custard or pastry cream
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
2. Add the warm milk, melted butter, and eggs. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
5. Punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Roll the dough out into a large rectangle, about 12×18 inches.
6. Spread the vanilla custard or pastry cream evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.
7. Carefully roll the dough up tightly, starting from the short side. Pinch the seam to seal.
8. Transfer the rolled dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet, seam-side down. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
10. Bake the Custard-Filled Sweet Bread for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.
11. Allow the bread to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use a homemade vanilla custard or pastry cream. You can also add a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard filling. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
