Ingredients
– 2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/4 cup granulated sugar
– 2 teaspoons baking powder
– 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
– 3/4 cup cold milk
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1 egg, beaten
– Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
1. – Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
3. – Cut in the chilled butter using a pastry cutter or two forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
4. – In a separate bowl, combine the milk, vanilla, and egg.
5. – Pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredients and stir just until a shaggy dough forms.
6. – Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times.
7. – Pat the dough into a 6-inch circle, about 3/4-inch thick.
8. – Cut the circle into 8 wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
9. – Bake for 14-16 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
10. – Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes.
11. – Dust the warm scones with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
– For a richer flavor, replace 2 tablespoons of the milk with heavy cream.
– Add 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the dry ingredients for a nutty crunch.
– Swap the vanilla extract for 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract for a delicate, nutty aroma.
