Description
These homemade soft pretzels are a delicious, easy-to-make classic. Enjoy them warm from the oven as a snack, appetizer, or party food.
Ingredients
– 1 1/2 cups warm water
– 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
– 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
– 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
– 2 teaspoons salt
– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
– 1 egg white, beaten with 1 tablespoon water
– Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
1. 1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
2. 2. Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture and stir until a shaggy dough forms. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
3. 3. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
4. 4. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
5. 5. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 24-inch rope. Shape into pretzels.
6. 6. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Gently drop the pretzels into the boiling water, one or two at a time, and cook for 30 seconds per side.
7. 7. Remove the pretzels from the water using a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheets. Brush the tops with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.
8. 8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until deep golden brown. Enjoy warm!
Notes
For chewier pretzels, boil for 1 minute per side. For softer pretzels, reduce boiling time to 15-20 seconds per side. Store baked pretzels in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
