Ingredients
– 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
– 1 teaspoon baking powder
– 1/2 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 2 large eggs
– 1/3 cup whole milk
– 1 tablespoon orange zest
– 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
3. Add the softened butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to incorporate it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
4. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and milk together.
5. Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a soft dough forms.
6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently for a minute or two.
7. Roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
8. In a small bowl, combine the orange zest and ground cardamom.
9. Sprinkle the orange-cardamom mixture evenly over the dough.
10. Starting from the short side, tightly roll the dough into a log.
11. Slice the log into 12 equal pieces and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet, cut-side up.
12. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the twists are golden brown.
13. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a more pronounced orange flavor, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed orange juice to the dough. Alternatively, you can brush the baked twists with a simple orange glaze.
